(6) The place of birth for son William in the 1871 census is stated as Glasgow and matches all other Census records that William appears on i.e. 1891 & 1901 Census of Dalziel, Motherwell, see records under William Ferguson Pollock. Only the 1881 Census above differs and would suggest a clerical error. The basis for this suggestion is that the 1881 Census was transcribed for the original hand written documents and produced as typed information. Lots of errors have been reported which are believed to have arisen from the fact that this census was transcribed in India and that transcribers would not be familiar with place names etc. and make inaccurate assumptions.

(7) Death certificate states that David had been removed form East Kilbride to Hamilton, Cause of Death: Malignant Disease of Intestines

(8) David, Farm Servant (aged 24) marriage to Williamina Lees (age 28) took place at 33 Abbotsford Place, Glasgow after Banns of the Established Church of Scotland. (4) From informant's name it looks like David and Williamina had at least one daughter who married a John Wagstaff.

Children of David Pollock are:

a. WILLIAM4 FERGUSON POLLOCK, b. 12 January 1862, Anderston, Glasgow; d. 15 September 1919, Motherwell, Lanarkshire.

Generation No. 4

4. WILLIAM4 FERGUSON POLLOCK (David3, Robert2, William1) was born 12 January 1862 in Anderston, Glasgow, Scotland, and died 15 September 1919, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He married AGNES DOW, 17 June 1884 in Hillhead, Glasgow, Scotland, daughter of DONALD DOW and MARGARET GILLESPIE. She was born 15 November 1864, Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland and died 22 February 1930, Hartwood Hospital, Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Notes for WILLIAM FERGUSON POLLOCK:

(1) Birth Registered as William Ferguson - Son of Janet Ferguson, believed to be the son or adopted son of David Pollock - (See David Pollock 1871 earlier Census Record above) Place of Birth: 12 January 1862, 5 Herbertson Street, Anderson, Glasgow

(2) In 1884 William's marriage certificate lists David Pollock & Williamina Lees as his parents.

(3) In 1881 census at 29A John Street, Glasgow, William Pollock born Carmichael, Argyll was listed aged 19 as a spirit salesman, with him were his father David, milk dealer, aged 48 born East Kilbride and mother Williamina, shop keeper, milk, aged 55 born Craigie, Ayr.

(4) The marriage of William (age 22) and Agnes (age 19) was carried out at 111 Henderson Street, Glasgow after publication of Banns according to the Church of Scotland, 17th June 1884. William was listed as a Spirit Salesman and Agnes as a Dressmaker. William's father David was listed as a Dairyman and mother as Williamina Pollock, ms Lees. Agnes's father Daniel Dow was listed as a Groom and her mother's maiden name was given as Margaret Gillespie. The marriage was registered in the District of Kelvin, Glasgow, 19th June 1884, William Buchanan, Registrar. The wedding was administered by James Douglas, Minister of St. Stephens and witnessed by Mary Gillespie and Joseph L Harvey.

(6) Listed in the 1901 Census of Dalziel 639/00 007/00 046 as a 39 year old Railway Brakesman, born in Glasgow, residing at 29 Abbotsford Place, Roman Road, Dalziel, Motherwell with his 37 year old wife Agnes, born in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, a Dressmaker working on her own account from home, and their children William F. age 10, John D. age 8, David age 6, Robert age 2 and Margaret age 6 months. The record also states the address had 2 rooms with one or more windows.

(7) Also in the 1901 household was his 29 year old sister-in-law Elizabeth McMaster (nee Dow), a Sick Nurse and her 2 year old daughter Margaret McMaster. Elizabeth was the mother of Winifred Stewart Dow and later married James Wylie McMaster in Glasgow on the 18th November 1896.

(8) William Pollock, railway brakesman, married to Agnes Dow, died aged 57 on the 15th September 1919 at 29 Abbotsford Place, Motherwell of Valvular disease of the heart, cardiac dropsy. His parents were listed as David Pollock, dairyman deceased and Janet Pollock, ms Ferguson. John Pollock, son was informant on the 16th September 1919 at Motherwell.

(9) Note that it is not clear why William's mother is listed as Janet Pollock, ms Ferguson on death certificate, this suggests a second marriage. But note that Williams middle name is Ferguson. So was Williamina Lees or Janet Ferguson William's mother? Most of evidence from 1871 and 1881 Census etc suggest Williamina is Williams' mother. However, in fact it is likely that Janet had an affair with David and William was the result.

Notes for AGNES DOW are:

(1) In 1881 census Agnes was living with her father Donald Dow in Glasgow as a 49 year old Groom living at 30 Scotia Street, Blythswood, Glasgow (off New City Road) with his 38 year old wife Margaret (Gillespie) and their six children. Agnes a 16 year old Dressmaker, Maggie (Margaret Jessie) 12 year old Scholar, Elizabeth 9 year old Scholar, Christina 7 year old Scholar, Mary age 5 and John age 2.

(2) Agnes Pollock widow of William Ferguson Pollock, steel worker died aged 65 on the 22nd February 1930 at Hartwood Asylum, Shotts, usual residence 57 Enfiled Place, Motherwell of Chronic bronchitis, morbus cardis and dementia. Son David Pollock was informant, living at 57 Enfield Place, Motherwell on the 22nd February 1930 at <//burgh>, district of Shotts, County of Lanark.

(3) In the 1871 census returns I found 2 Agnes Dow entries aged 6. One had father listed as Donald Dow with wife Margaret. Donald was also listed as a Groom as Daniel Dow had been listed in William's and Agnes's marriage. At the moment there is no evidence that a Daniel Dow existed with the correct time and place. Therefore in 1871 census at 146 <Cowns> Land, Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Donald Dow, aged 34, Groom born Midlothian, Edinburgh, was listed with his wife Margaret, aged 28, muslin weaver, born Kilwinning, Ayrshire with daughter Agnes aged 6, born Kilwinning and Margaret aged 2 born Barrhead, Renfrewshire.

(4) From this we found Agnes Dow, born 15 November 1864 at <Cordehill> Kilwinning. Donald Dow, Groom was listed as father and Margaret Dow, ms Gillespie as mother. This confirms that Agnes father was called Donald not Daniel. Donald Dow made his mark as informant and John Service was registrar to birth registered on the 22nd November 1864 at Kilwinning. Donald and Margaret were listed as being married on the 1st April 1864 at Kilwinning.

(5) Donald Dow, aged 25, groom, bachelor of Eglinton, Kilwinning married Margaret Gillespie, aged 22 of <Gorsehill>, Kilwinning on the 1st of April 1864 at <Gorsehill> Kilwinning after banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. Donald's parents were listed as John Dow, deceased and Margaret Dow, deceased (no maiden name listed). Margaret's parents were listed as Andrew Gillespie, brick moulder deceased and Jane Gillespie, ms Wylie. John Sime assistant minister of Kilwinning performed the ceremony and Robert Napier and Elizabeth Gillespie were witnesses. John Service was registrar on the 2nd April 1864 at Kilwinning.

(6) Margaret Dow aged 70, widow of Donald Dow, coachman, died on the 28th of September 1912 at 43 Morrison Street, Glasgow of Chronic bronchitis. PRISONERS OF WAR

Sergeant John Pollock, Scottish Rifles, who has been missing since the start of the German offensive on 23rd March, has turned up a prisoner of war in Germany. He is a Military Medallist, and before enlisting was employed with Messrs Edwards, butchers, The Cross.

(7) What life was like for John as a prisoner of war would probably have been similar to the experiences of NORAH LOUISE WHITTAKER, Born in Yorkshire 3rd February 1900 – Died Perth, Western Australia 2 November 1991 brother Bert who joined the Kings Royal Rifles and was sent to France. He was captured by the Germans and sent to a prison camp. We used to write often to him but he couldn’t tell us much. After he came home he told us that in Stendal (the prison camp) food was scarce and they had to scrounge it from dustbins and odd places. He was later sent to a farm to work for a woman called Frau Winterbauer and things got better. She said he reminded her of her son who was away in the war and she called him Peter. While he was there he got pneumonia and she wrapped him in feather-bedcovers. She not only cured that illness but also the problems he had previously incurred some years earlier when his shoulder blade had pierced his lung when he was knocked off his bike by a dog. It was in 1917 or 1918 when he returned home.

Story 4.

RECIEVES D.F.M. FROM KING - Co-op Butcher At Palace

At an investiture at Buckingham Palace King George decorated Warrant-Officer William Pollock, R.A.F., with the Distinguished Flying Medal, won some eight months ago for gallantry as a member of a bomber crew. Severely wounded, Pollock was in danger of losing a leg, but the doctors worked miracles and saved the lad for continued service in the R.A.F. Since he was awarded the D.F.M. Pollock has been promoted from Sergeant to warrant officer and air gunner instructor. At the investiture, His Majesty, dressed in Naval Uniform, decorated quite a number of service men. As becoming the senior service, the men of the Navy got precedence in the lists and then came the Army, with the R.A.F. personnel bringing up the rear. W.O. Pollock was fifth on the list. His majesty asked him how many operation he had done and the W.O. answered that he had completed 30. The King congratulated him on his fine record, and wished him good luck for the future, pining the medal on his breast and shaking hands with him. Mother and Girl Friend. In the audience at the Pallace were Pollock's mother, Mrs. Agnes Pollock, 98 Millburn Street, and his girl friend, Miss May Hamilton, Ladywell Road, member of the Women's Land Army and formerly a fellow employee with Pollock in the No. 1 Co-op at Bellshill Road. Willie was in charge of the butchery counter, while May was at the grocery desk. W.O. Pollock nearly missed the investiture, as he was in hospital for a week or so prior to the date. He told the doctors he didn't want to disappoint his mother and girl friend who were travelling from Scotland. Would they please get him well so that he could keep the "date". The doctors responded magnificently, all the more so when they knew that the D.F.M. had been waiting on the young Scot for eight months. So on the morning of the investiture W.O. Pollock was in waiting outside Buckingham Palace. His mother and Miss Hamilton speedily caught sight of him and, greeting over, the party presented themselves at the Palace. Among the other R.A..F. personnel in waiting W.O. Pollock recognised a sergeant from Manchester who was also a recipient of the D.F.M.. The two lads had a joyful reunion before going forward to receive their decorations and the Motherwell and Manchester families chummed up, the airmen making the introductions. An orchestra played and the time of waiting was spent most agreeably. A Family Tradition.. W.O. Pollock's father, Mr John Pollock, is a Military Medallist of the last war, in which he served in the local Territorial Battalion of the Scottish Rifles. In another respect it is a case of like father, like son. Mr Pollock, Senior., is also a butcher.
