(4) The Scotsman – Thursday 16th July 1908, page 6: TERRIBLE TRAGEDY IN EDINBURGH. SCHOOLMASTER AND HIS WIFE FOUND DEAD. A distressing affair, involving the death, evidently at their own hands, of an Edinburgh schoolmaster and his wife, occurred in the Warrender Park district of Edinburgh yesterday. In the afternoon a women residing in Tarvit Street, who was a friend of the deceased, received from a Mrs Mauchline, 36 Warrnader Park Terrace, a letter, bearing the 3.15pm post mark, asking her to call at Warrander Park Terrace, and to bring a doctor. The note indicated where the key to the house would be found, and also what steps should be taken in the event of an accident. About half-past eight the husband of the women in question went to the house, and on entrance being obtained by means of the key, found in the place indicated, a terrible sight presented itself. In a bed in one of the rooms were found the dead bodied of Mr and Mrs Mauchline. In Mr Mauchline’s left hand was a revolver, and two discharged cartridges clearly indicated what had happened. From the position of the bodies it was evident that the husband and wife had determined that they should part this life together. Both were partially undressed. They were found with hands clasped, the women holding with her left hand her husband’s right. The neighbours heard no sounds of the discharge of firearms, and at what time the tragedy took place still remains uncertain. Professor Harvey Littlejohn, who saw the bodied in the evening, was of the opinion that death had taken place some hours previously. So far as could be ascertained, no note was left by either husband or wife, save the one already referred to, suggesting the cause which had led them to terminate their existence. The police, however, it seems, had been informed that both had been recently in bad health. A significant incident in connection with the tragedy is the fact that the son of Mr and Mrs Mauchline, who is a marine engineer, has sailed that morning from Leith for foreign parts. The house in which the deceased resided was on the first flat, and comfortably furnished, and suggested that those occupying it were in fairly comfortable circumstances. No detailed investigation by the police was possible last night, only the bare facts of the tragedy being obtainable. Assuming that the man fired the shots, he must apparently have done so with his left hand. The women, was shot through the heart, and the man through the left side of his head. Mauchline was a man of sixty-one years of age, and from appearance his wife was some years his junior. On the news of the tragic affair leaking out, it created a great sensation in the immediate neighbourhood.

(5) The Scotsman – Friday 17th July 1908, page 6: THE EDINBURGH TRADEGY. So far further inquiry into the terrible tradegy enacted in Warrender Park Terrace, Edinburgh on Wednesday afternoon, only tends to ……. The mystery surrounding the death of Mr and Mrs Mauchline. No motive can be assigned <as> it remains doubtful whether each in turn committed suicide, or, assuming that the one took the life of the other, which of the two did so. Mrs Mauchline, who was found lying in bed, was shot through the breast, the passage of the bullet indicating that the revolver had been held in a perpendicular position above. Mr Mauchline, on the other hand, was hot on the left side of the head, the bullet entering about the ear and passing directly through the head. The revolver was found close by Mr Mauchline’s left hand, and his right hand was clasped in the left hand of his wife, while her right hand was beneath the bedclothes. There was however, little doubt that Mrs Mauchline <must have been> aware that something was aout to take place. As has already been stated, she wrote to a friend in Travit Street – Mr Alston, whose daughter is married to a son of the deceased, with which a request was made that he should call, and bring a doctor in the case of accident. There was some direction that the bodied should be cremated, and instructions as to the funeral was given. She also wrote to her husband, who was first assistant in Torphichen Street Public School, telling him that she was ill, and that he should come home and see about a doctor by express messenger about half-past twelve, and leave of absence was immediately granted to Mr Mauchline. His colleagues in the school had noticed nothing of an unusual nature in his conduct that morning-indeed, it was remarked afterwards that he seemed to be in quite a cheerful mood. On the headmaster asking Mr Mauchline if his wife was suffering froma cold or influenza or anything serious, Mr Mauchline gave him to understand that Mrs Mauchline had recently had delusions, and that he was afraid her mind might give way. The headmaster then told Mr Mauchline that he had better remain with his wife for the rest of the day. From the nature of her conduct generally there appears to be little doubt that Mrs Mauchline has not been in the best of health for some time, and she had given her friends some anxiety on that account. No so Mr Mauchline, who up to the last conducted his classes at Torpichen Street with his usual ability; and he frequently attended the Edinburgh Exhibition for the purpose of hearing the regimental and other bands-music being his great hobby. Indeed he was passionately fond of music. He had at one time been a bandmaster, and nothing appeared to give him greater pleasure than good music. He knew a number of the principal bandmasters, could play the cornet and the flute and had written a few musical compositions. He was also an authority on military affairs. He had inherited the military spirit, and could tell almost to a day when this, that, or the other regiment took up its quarters in Edinburgh Castle for years past. The Mauchlines were in no financial difficulties; indeed, there was a considerable sum of money in the house.

Arrangements have been made by near relations of the deceased to have the interment of the bodies on Saturday. The funeral will take place in Dean Cemetery.

MR MAUCHLINE’S CAREER.

Mr Robert Mauchline was born in 1846 so that he was sixty-two years of age. As a junior teacher he was for some time in a school in the West Port, and after passing through the Training College he went to Yorkshire, and thereafter to Carluke, where he met Mrs Mauchline, a native of that place. He then became headmaster of Old Assembly Close School, under the Herriot <Trust> the School Board, on the abolition of the school in Assembly Close, taking Mr Mauchline as one of their assistants, and the Herriot Trust giving him a small sum in compensation for loss of <?> . In Torpichen Street he was in receipt of the maximum salary for a first assistant, and in three years would have reached the age limit for retirement on pension. Deceased was of rather weak sight, a matter which had been troubling him for years. He was particularly well versed in historical subjects, especially those with which the military was associated; and he had a wide knowledge of geography. Of a genial and kindly disposition, he was regarded by his colleagues as about the last man to be <coaccured> in a tragedy of the kind.

The news of the affair created a painful sensation in Carluke, where both of the deceased were well known. Mrs Mauchline is a native of the place, being a daughter of the late Robert Russell, at on etime one of the leading merchants in Carluke. Mr Mauchline held an appointment at Carluke School about twenty-five years ago, and was married while in Carluke.
