Notes on Robert Mauchline are:
(1) David and Sara Meadows web page lists Robert as ROBERT BURNS MAUCHLINE, 27 Jul 1837, Ayrshire, Scotland, d. 1899, Woodlawn, Alabama, USA (does not look like this is correct as IGI report Robert as born in Dalserf with parents as James Mauchline and Rachael Scott)

3. ROBERT3 MAUCHLINE (James1) was born 03 April 1804, Eastwood, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and died 20 Oct 1884, Larkhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Living at Gowan Glen – 1 house inhabited was Robert Mauchline, cotton handloom weaver aged 35 listed as not born in Scotland with most probably his wife Margaret Mauchlin, lace tambourer and probably son Robert aged 3 born Scotland.
(6) In 1851 census Robert Mauchlin, aged 41 was listed as a widower living at Raploch Croft, so if correct Robert, his first wife Margaret must have died by this time. He was listed as a handloom cotton weaver born Pollockshaws, Renfrewshire. With him was his nephew also called Robert aged 13, listed as Pirn Winder, born Dalserf. This Robert is probably Robert’s brother James’s child. Note that Robert has given his age as 41 sames as 51 in 1861 census.

(10) Robert Mauchline, weaver, married to Marion Moffat and formerly to Margaret < possibly Patrick or Pollock>, died aged 80 on 20th October 1884 in <Elugowan>, District of Larkhall of heart disease. (1) Not sure who William's parents were! Originally thought he was oldest son of James Ramage Mauchline but now suspect Jane as she had a later illegitimate child and was alive in William's birth year, abt 1864. Facts are however confusing eg (see (2-5).
(2) In 1881 census William (aged 17) was living with his grandfather David in 65 John Street, Dalserf. He was listed as a Pupil Teacher.
(3) Possibly William was James Ramage Mauchline’s son from an earlier marriage or potentiallly illegitimate, although it is unusual for the father to have the baby. (3) Story 2 – 1929 - SOUTH DALZIEL NOMINEE - Brilliant Young Scholar Chosen, The Vacancy Committee of the South Dalziel Parish Church has chosen as their sole nominee to the congregation a young scholar of quite exceptional talents in the person of Rev. John Mauchline, M.A., B.D. Mr. Mauchline has a most distinguished career at Glasgow University, and also at the Divinity Hall. He had first class honours in classics, and also in Semetic Languages, while in the Divinity Hall he won practically every prize that was open to him to win. In addition to taking honours in classics, he won the Blackstone Gold Medal for the same subject, the Maclean Scholarship and he was the first divinity student to win the coveted Faulds Fellowship. Even in the early stages of his education this young man had an equally remarkable record. He was dux of Hutcheson Grammar School in 1919, and president of the School Council in 1920. His Rector said of him, "His personal character stands on as high level as his ability, and, in short, no words of mine could be too good for him"; while the Rector of the Royal High School, Edinburgh, says of him "that on the side of scholarship, his former pupil, John Mauchline, is equipped far beyond most men for the ministry of the church." While on the subject of rectors, it is interesting to recall that Mr Anderson, Rector of Motherwell High School was Mr. Mauchline's teacher of mathematics in Glasgow. Mr. Mauchline is a young man of about 28 years of age. He has just returned from studying at the School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem. He preaches in South Dalziel before the congregation on Sunday first, morning and evening. There will be doubtless be a large number of the congregation to hear this scholarly young man whom rectors at High Schools and professors in Glasgow University praise so very highly, and whom their Vacancy Committee recommend.

(4) Story 3 – 1929 - NEW MINISTER ELECTED - South Dalziel's Choice, As stated in our last issue, the Vacancy Committee of South Dalziel Parish Church last week, chose as their sole nominee to the congregation the Rev. John Mauchline, M.A., B.D. This young and brilliant scholar occupied the pulpit on both occasions last Sunday, and how delighted the congregation was with his ministrations may be gauged from the fact that he was unanimously chosen as successor to the late Rev. Duff McDonald, D.D.. Voting took place on Monday in connection with the vacancy, the voting showing 540 votes for Mr. Mauchline, and one against. The new minister, a young man of 28 years of age is of scholarly attainment, and has just returned from a course of study in Palestine. He has had a most distinguished university career, and it is believed that in the large and flourishing charge of South Dalziel he will have scope for his undoubted skills and talents. We should add that the young minister's sermons on Sunday were characterised by breadth of outlook, fine diction and keen insight, without striving for effect. He will start shortly in his new sphere under the happiest of auspices, and we can congratulate both preacher and people on the settlement.

(5) Story 4 – 1953 New Principal, The Rev. Professor John Mauchline a former minister of South Dalziel, has been appointed Principal of Trinity College, Glasgow.

In William marriage to Maggie Shearer his parents were listed as David and Jane. In marriage to Agnes Wilson and on death certificate his parents were listed as David and Margaret. (3) Note that David’s death was entered into death certificate list on two occasions one 1889 and the other 1894, all other details were the same.

(4) After the 1845 Poor Law Amendment (Scotland) Act, poor law provision in Glasgow was divided between four parishes: Barony, City, Govan and Gorbals. Gorbals never set up a poorhouse and was absorbed by Govan in 1873. Glasgow's Barony Parish Poorhouse at Barnhill opened in 1853 and was described in 1882 as "a very capacious asylum for the children of poverty and well adapted by its cleanliness, ventilation and position to mitigate the ills of their condition." The poorhouse layout and location are shown in the 1914 OS map below: Barnhill site, 1914. In 1885, Malcolm McNeill (Visiting Officer for the Board of Supervision) reported on conditions at Barnhill. The Class C diet he refers to comprised meal and milk for breakfast and supper, and bread and meat-broth for dinner. The House appeared to me clean and orderly throughout. My attention was attracted by the large amount of bread etc. stored in the Infirm Wards, and on enquiry I learned that the issue is made but once daily instead of with each separate meal. The Committee should consider this subject and in my opinion should direct the issue of each ration complete at the meal hour, and the removal after a reasonable interval of the unconsumed food. The women in the washhouse still receive tea and bread in addition to class C diet — an unnecessary, and in some respects, mischievous indulgence. The diet of the children is wisely varied, and their appearance is satisfactory, but I must still urge the substitution of sweet milk for buttermilk in the whole of this class. When the furnishing of the test wards is undertaken I should propose to the Committee the abolition of the double bed to contain mother and child, and the introduction of a small crib for each infant, placed beside, or at the foot of, the mother's bed. According to Barr (1972), strict discipline was observed in Barnhill. Able-bodied inmates were required to make up 350 bundles of firewood per day and stonebreakers were expected to break 5 cwt. per day. Any inmate not producing the stated amount was put on a bread and water diet in solitary confinement for 12 hours. Disorderly conduct such as swearing or breaking of rules, resulted in being put on a diet, excluding milk and buttermilk, for a period of three days. In 1904, the Glasgow City and Barony parishes merged. Barnhill was reconstructed and enlarged and the City poorhouse was closed. The existing inmates from City were moved to Barnhill, which now became Scotland's largest poorhouse. In 1945, Barnhill was renamed Foresthall Home and Hospital. After the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948, it catered mainly for vagrants but had a geriatric section, which was closed in stages between 1978 and 1983. It was demolished in 1988. With the creation of a single poor law authority in Glasgow, three new establishments were built: Stobhill Hospital, and the Eastern and Western General Hospitals. As well as the Barnhill poorhouse, Barony parish erected a mental asylum at Woodilee in Lenzie in 1875.

‘Man Rescued from Fire – Groping his way through smoke and flames, Superintendent Lavery, of the Glasgow Fire Brigade, early yesterday effected the rescue of an elderly man from a blazing dwelling in the East End of the city. The fire broke out in the single-apartment home of Hugh Mauchline (64), 41 Eveline Street, Dennistoun, and neighbours unsuccessfully tried to enter the house before the fire brigade arrived. Realising there was no time to lose, Mr Lavery made straight for the apartment, and found Mauchline lying unconscious beside the bed which was in flames. He carried him outside, where his injuries were dressed prior to his removal to the Royal Infirmary. The fireman quickly had the outbreak under control.’

‘Magnificent Save – Some sparkling play by Walker gave Hearts (vs St Mirren) an early advantage, but over-strong passing ruined several promising attacks. A clever interchange by Warren and Walsh gave Mauchline a chance, and McCloy saved at full stretch.’

(3) The farm Todholes in East Kilbride was part of the Torrance House Estate and can be found in Roy’s map of Scotland, c1750, the original of which is in the British Library. Todholes is not on the 1813 Forrest’s map of Lanarkshire nor the OS map 1st Edition surveyed in 1858. Sometimes listed as Todhills farm the tenant was listed as Allan Arneill on the 6th Nov 1727. By 1760 the tenant was Hugh Machline, tenancy was listed as beginning on 1753 for life, rental £8, he was also listed in 1775 and 1782 and lost the tenancy on his death in 1790. Details from the Rental of the Estate of Torrance belonging to Colonel James Stuart, original papers in the National Library of Scotland. The 1796 rental lists James Young as tenant of Todhills and Birnyhill farm. Note it is likely that Todholes and Birniehill farm merged at the time of Hugh’s death and the Todholes section was amalgamated into the Birniehill farm, hence the losss of the todholes name from the maps. Birniehill farm was present on the OS map of 1958 but was swallowed up by the enlargement of the New Town of East Kilbride by the time of the 1881 OS map. The local librarian said that there is a Todholes street in the current town of East Kilbride.
